The Philharmonia Orchestra’s City of Dreams series continues with their concert on 28 May at Royal Festival Hall. Esa-Pekka Salonen’s first major festival with the Orchestra, they’re exploring the music and art of Vienna from 1900-935. Suitably, violinist Christian Tetzlaff performs Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto with those deceptively simple opening notes and the Orchestra go on to perform Mahler’s Sixth Symphony. In the video above, Salonen talks about Vienna and the festival – but there’s loads more to see on the City of Dreams site itself.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra performs Torsten Rasch’s new work My Heart is on Fire on 31 May. This new song cycle goes deep into the language of love – from 19th-century poetry to the lyrics of industrial metal band Rammstein. Listen to sound clips of the work. Vladimir Jurowksi conducts this performance, and you can hear him discussing both the Rasch and Mahler’s Totenfeier, also performed on 31 May, in the Orchestra’s May podcast.
